First steps to SDA

How to get started with the NDIS and living with Nesti.

Getting started

It can be a confusing world to navigate – with lots of acronyms and options to understand. Once you identify housing as a goal within your NDIS plan, that’s where we come in. Helping you get home services, on your terms.

How does the NDIS work?

Everyone with an NDIS package receives funds, each year, to choose the supports and services they need. It can be for everyday help or future goals, to get what they want out of life.

There are two key steps to the NDIS when it comes to housing.

Step 1. Eligibility assessment

No two NDIS participants are the same. Unique factors like location, age, and early intervention are all considered.

Step 2. Planning assessment

This is where things get personal. Designing a plan that reflects you, your choices, and your goals for life.

Eligibility

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is designed to work together with a number of different supports. To work out if you’re eligible, the NDIS will think about what other assistance you need and how it will all fit together.

You can find out more about eligibility here.

If you’re unclear about your eligibility – give the Nesti team a call. They’ve lots of experience in this area and will happily help unriddle it for you.

If it turns out you’re not eligible for SDA, that’s a-ok. We’ll still be able to give you advice on how to access our other programs and housing options.

Your home wish list

So, you’ve identified housing as a goal and have found out your eligible? Great news! The next step is to start thinking about what kind of home you’d like. Things like which design category (you can learn about those here) and support level will play a part in your funding application.

Other things you may want to consider are:

  • A postcode that’s close to friends & family
  • Access to public transport (if getting out and about is your fav)
  • If you prefer private or shared spaces, or a flexible mix of both

Top tip: you don’t have to make any decisions yet, but we encourage you to think about what you like early on (it helps us find the right fit).

Approved to move

Once your SDA application has been approved, the funding will become available in your new NDIS plan. Now is the time to think about who you’d like as your Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider. We have a range of vetted and values-driven SIL providers we collaborate with, but the choice is yours to make.

A new lease on life

From here, the Tenant Engagement Team will take the reins. Everything from shortlisting options and home tours, housemate matches and even housewarming gifts, will be handled by them.

Throughout your time with us, you’ll have a dedicated team for all of your tenancy needs. If you have maintenance to report, a request to customise your space, or any questions about your home – you’ll have a friendly face from Nesti to reach out to.
