After 30 years in the public sector, Jacqui would be forgiven for trading her office chair for a beach recliner and reflecting on her distinguished career as the waves roll in. 

But – in leadership, and in life – that’s not who Jacqui is.

Instead, she has taken the reins as Nesti’s Managing Director. A pivot inspired by the people and purpose that Nesti Housing encompasses. 

First Impressions

Q. If you had to describe your first few months – in just three words – what would they be, and why?

A. Welcomed; lighter; excited. 

The team at Nesti have been incredibly warm and welcoming and I already feel part of the Nesti family, like I have come home. I feel lighter because this role gives me more freedom to be creative and innovative, and with that comes the excitement about the possibilities and opportunities.   

Q.  Has there been a moment where you thought, “Yes, this is exactly why I took this role”?

A. Yes – there have been several times since I started where I have thought that. I have always been a systems thinker and problem solver and this role has allowed me to consider how the different components of Nesti can work together, along with our partners within PeopleKind Group, and really think outside the box in terms of how we address the current housing challenge. 

People Power

Q.  What’s been your favourite conversation so far – the one that stuck with you after it ended?

A. My first site visit to an SDA property in High Wycombe was inspiring and there were a number of conversations during the visit that have stayed with me.

Speaking with the parents, support coordinator, developers, and our Housing Engagement team, it really got me thinking about how we can support families to provide a safe and supported home for young adults transitioning to independence. As a registered SDA provider and licensed real estate agency we are well placed to connect with relevant stakeholders and work with families to create a community. A community where young people can be supported to live independently and thrive, while also providing families with peace of mind.

Q. What have you learned about the people here that doesn’t show up on an org chart?

A. Without exception, the passion that the Nesti team has shines through. The desire to make a positive difference is genuine, in the support of our tenants and families, and collaborative work with our chosen partners.

Q. What’s one small ritual or habit you’ve already picked up since joining? 

A. Chatting with the team, sharing updates and whereabouts, and the occasional meme on the Nesti Water Cooler.

Fresh Eyes

Q. Looking at the business with fresh eyes, what feels most full of potential right now? 

A. With my previous experience at the Department of Communities, there is real potential to identify opportunities and work with families, developers, and service providers to support people to access the right home for them. We know that great homes, in ideal locations, can create a community and have a life changing impact.

Q. What’s one thing you’ve spotted that will benefit from your experience? 

A. Nesti is a young organisation that has a proud history. With origins that have always put people at the heart of what we do, we provide opportunities for safe and secure homes. It is important for me to continue to build on this strong foundation of people, processes, and housing solutions. My aim is to strengthen and grow the four departments of Nesti, while building on the collaborative partnerships we have with likeminded organisations.

Q. What’s been the biggest learning curve in your first month? 

A. While I have a background in housing, I have had limited exposure to the operations of traditional real estate and Specialist Disability Accommodation. So, that has been a big learning curve for me. Learning the jargon and acronyms is always a challenge in a new job. And as this is my first role with a not-for-profit organisation, I’m still wrapping my head around all the salary packaging benefits.

Looking Ahead

Q. Without giving too much away, what excites you most about what’s ahead?

A. Nesti is in a unique position to provide housing solutions and maintenance services to empower vulnerable people, and to collaborate with others to achieve that. The combination of the Nesti Realty business, Community Housing, Specialist Disability Accommodation, and Maintenance team, provides an exciting value proposition that has the potential to be a game changer. We can respond to the housing crisis and deliver tangible benefits for those that need it most.

Q. What would success look like one year on, not just for the business, but for the people?

A. Success one year on means achieving sustainable growth and a strong and recognisable brand, while fostering a healthy, skilled, and engaged Nesti team. We want to continue uplifting our positive culture – where people feel valued, balanced, and personally fulfilled in their roles.

A Personal Flourish

Q. We noticed that you love a meeting agenda. What’s one thing in your personal calendar that is a non-negotiable?

A. Getting to Pilates or Yoga most days each week. Exercising keeps me strong and focused and helps me maintain a positive mindset. I also make sure I get to the beach most Sunday mornings for a swim.

My daughter graduates from university next year, so we are planning a trip for Christmas in 2027 to celebrate.

Q. Is there a book, podcast, or show you’ve been enjoying lately?

A. I am currently listening to The Diary of a CEO – The 33 Laws of Business and Life by Steven Bartlett. He is very practical and down-to-earth, and much of what he shares is applicable and relevant. 

I’ve also just finished watching ‘The Beast in Me’ on Netflix which was a good, thought-provoking psychological thriller.

Q. If your first month had a soundtrack, what song would be on repeat?

Can I pick two? To represent my first month, it would have to be “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen and Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly”.

We shouldn’t play favourites..

but at Nesti HQ – March is a marvellous time of year. The leaves are turning, the afternoons linger, and it’s the ideal time to settle into something new (like a new home, perhaps?)

For the Nesti Team, the best things in the life are when we are free. Free to step away from our desks and out into community. As we hung the green curtains and straightened our vacancy flyers – we we’re ready to talk to absolutely everyone that walked through the doors of Developing Australian Communities Expo. 

Now that the goodie bags have been handed out and the event has wrapped up – here is a recap of our thoughts and the themes we heard the most during our time at the Perth Convention Centre. 

It’s what we’ve always known and fought for. So, it was reassuring to be reminded. That time and time again – building a rich and fulfilling life begins with access to a great home. Stories were told of social connections, employment opportunities, and wish list holidays that all stemmed from the keys to a safe and secure home. A pertinent reminder of not just what we do, but why we do it.

The days of a cookie-cutter approach to Specialist Disability Accommodation are long gone, and it’s a movement that is being led – not by providers – but by participants and their families actively knowing what they want in a new home. We spoke to many families at different ends of exploration into custom housing solutions. Some just dipping their toes into the market or looking to modify their existing homes, and others who were already settled into SDA, wanting to share the positive outcomes they’d experienced.

The common thread? Inclusive homes that meet individual needs will always be in-demand and on trend.

Even in times of uncertainty in the housing sector, we can be certain of one thing. If you put people at the heart of what you do – you won’t be alone in your mission. To be surrounded by some many other providers – more like colleagues than competitors – reminded us that the journey to provide people with better opportunities is a collective one.

Ok, so maybe a slight humble brag.  But to be recognised, greeted with a wave, and have our name known by attendees was really meaningful to our team. We’re working hard, sticking to our values, and surrounding ourselves with impactful partners. As our reputation continues to grow, it’s nice to know we’re making a difference in the homes that are available to Western Australian’s. Nesti’s latest SDA begins

Two purpose-built homes will be constructed in Beechboro to meet growing demand for Specialist Disability Accommodation in Western Australia, with the first soil turned by the project stakeholders last week. This block will soon become customised homes for six people with disability to help meet their individual needs and maximise day-to-day independence.

The property development will be lead by WAI Group, with Nesti Housing as the Specialist Disability Accommodation provider, and Nulsen Disability Services deliver the supported independent living services.

Located 13km from the Perth CBD, 100m from public transport and less than 500m from a supermarket and café, the residences have been designed to comply with and exceed SDA and NDIS standards. Each property is architecturally designed with three bedrooms, as well as large corridors and living spaces so participants can navigate the home with ease, step-free paths, adjustable kitchen benches, movable cabinets and height accessible light switches and power points.

Residents will have their own bedroom and ensuite and access to a kitchen, generous living spaces and an outdoor area. There is also a separate bedroom, office space and bathroom for overnight support care professionals.

WAI Group Director Paul Stanley said the Beechboro project was the latest investment in a slate of inclusive SDA homes by WAI Group across the state. “WAI Group is as proud leader in Specialist Disability Accommodation and affordable housing in WA. Together with disability and supported independent living providers, we are committed to increasing stocks of SDA properties.”

Nesti Housing Managing Director James Allbeury said everyone deserved a safe, accessible, inclusive home. “At Nesti Housing, we believe everyone deserves a home that supports their independence and dignity. This project in Beechboro is a great example of what’s possible when like-minded partners come together to deliver high-quality, purpose-built housing that truly meets the needs of people with disability.”

Fortitude Living and G Living architect-builder Gianpaolo Crugnale said the Beechboro project had been designed to meet the personal needs of participants, while using best-practice architecture and construction. “The needs of future residents have been central to the planning of these homes, with designs that blend practical ideas and comfortable living. Our expertise and creative approach ensures each project we work on is tailored to the people who will ultimately live there.”

Nesti & Nulsen align again

Even the 40°C heat couldn’t stop the Nesti team, our partners, and future families from gathering for the official groundbreaking of this extra exciting micro-estate.

On the shovels were Nulsen CEO Caroline Watt, SDA Compass Managing Director Jim Poignand, City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes and Nesti Managing Director James Allbeury.

Joining them were members from each of the partner teams along with Ainsley Cousins, the devoted parent of Ben who will be living in one of the homes when completed in mid-2025.

Along with other family members, Ainsley has been involved in the planning of this specialised development for the past year, including the selections of bricks, roofing, colour schemes and layouts.

When completed, these four exceptional properties will be managed by Nesti Housing and home to several people Nulsen supports. We can’t wait!

Specialist living in Mandurah

A stylish apartment complex in Mandurah is part of a new era in dedicated homes for Western Australians with a disability.

The project is a collaboration between property developer NDIS Property WA, specialist disability accommodation provider Nesti Housing and supported independent living provider Diversity South and was officially opened today by the Member for Dawesville Lisa Munday.

Comprising four, 2-bed 2 bathroom apartments and two residential studios to provide onsite overnight assistance (if required), the homes are designed to promote independent living while meeting rigorous high physical support (HPS) standards.

NDIS Property WA Managing Director, John Palmer said the company was driven to create amazing homes to support people living with a disability.

Each of the homes has premium fixtures and assistive technology including facial recognition, environmental controls and height adjustable features giving easy access from a standing or seated position to bench tops, cupboards and cabinets. There is also provision to fully automate the home if needed.

Mr Palmer, emphasised NDIS Property WA’s unwavering commitment to creating more housing opportunities for people with a disability.

Nesti Housing Managing Director James Allbeury said the Hall Street apartments align with Nesti’s commitment to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have a safe, accessible, and inclusive home. “Creating sustainable housing solutions for the Western Australian community is core to what we do at Nesti as a housing provider.”

The apartments have fully accessible parking and are close to public transport, shopping centres, medical facilities and the stunning Mandurah foreshore.

The Mandurah homes are part of Nesti Housing’s growing residential portfolio which include home options in Carlisle and Riverton, with further developments underway in Hamilton Hill, Maddington, Dalyellup, Midvale, and Australind.
